Eggs contain vitamins

Eggs are highly nutritious and contain all vitamins except vitamin c. Egg yolks are one of the few foods that naturally contain vitamin D which is essential for healthy bones and teeth.

How many eggs do we eat?

12,930 million eggs were consumed in 2017…that’s a +3% rise year on year. Only 60% of those were Free Range (organic approx. 1%). We firmly believe in traditional methods and that hens should be able to roam freely – which is why we have so many varieties – giving people an egg for any occasion. Our Hen Picked are our mixed weight family value egg – free range but at a price that competes with barn eggs.

How many eggs can I eat?

As many as you like!

Neither the Department of Health nor the British Heart Foundation recommend a limit on the number of eggs you can eat. Some people have had reservations in the past about eating eggs, due to their cholesterol content, but it is now recognised that eating too much saturated fat is more likely to raise blood cholesterol than eating foods rich in dietary cholesterol. Eggs are not high in saturated fat.

How do you know if an egg is fresh?

Fresh eggs sink in water, stale ones float.

However all our eggs carry a data stamp.

Where should I store eggs?

For optimum freshness and food safety, eggs should be kept at a constant temperature below 20°C.  This is why it is advised to keep the eggs in the fridge so they can be kept at a constant temperature.

Are raw eggs safe?

The Food Standards Agency has confirmed that raw/ runny eggs are safe for all! As long as they have the British Lion stamp on. Download PDF for more info.

Our Boost the Roost eggs, highlight this perfectly. We give the hens an incredibly nutritious feed with selenium & DHA Omega 3 as part of it, which they in turn deposit these nutrients and minerals into the eggs.

How often do hen's lay eggs?

To produce one egg, it takes a hen 24-26 hours! Did you also know that as a hen grows older she produces larger eggs.

We make sure we have no wastage from our hard working hens, which is why we have an egg brand for every occasion. Our Hen Picked eggs are a mixed weight box and sometimes feature pullets eggs (from younger birds), these are beautiful for pickling and poaching. Then you have the Original Medium, Original Large…right up to Grand (XL eggs).

White Eggs vs Brown Eggs

The colour of the egg shell is dependent on the breed of the hen. In general, white hens produce white eggs and brown hens brown eggs. Since the 1980s the British industry has produced almost 100 per cent brown shelled eggs, although several other countries still produce white shelled eggs. There is no nutritional difference between white and brown shelled eggs.

We have introduced a flock of white birds on our home farm, they are beautiful birds and we mainly used these eggs in our paasteuriser as the shells tend to be slightly thinner so easier to break in the breaker.

Can I recycle the egg box?

Our egg cartons are made from 100% recycled material (newspaper pulp), and are 100% compostable and biodegradable. 

Not only that you can reuse all your egg shells. They can be used in a number of ways in the garden;

  1. Crushed up egg shells sprinkled around plants help prevent snails and slugs
  2. You can also mix together crushed shells and dried coffee grounds and add to potted plants to boost nutrients
  3. The water that you use to boil your eggs can be used on your plants – the egg shell’s calcium that has leached into the water benefits the plant
  4. Add egg shells to your compost heap to boost nutrients
  5. Start new seeds in the egg shell, again the seeds will benefit from the shell’s nutrients
